Magistrate Folashade Botoku of an Ebute-Metta Chief Magistrate Court on Friday, March 11, has ruled that the the Managing Director of Lekki Gardens, Mr. Richard Nyong, should be remanded in police custody for 30 days.
Lekki Gardens owns the five-storey building, which collapsed on Kushenla Road, Ikate Elegushi area of Lagos on Tuesday, March. At least 35 people were killed in the accident.
The Lagos State Police Command had requested to keep Nyong pending the conclusion of on-going investigation.
According to a statement signed by the Bola Akingbade, Deputy Director, Public Affairs Officer of the Lagos State Ministry of Justice, the court also ordered one of the contractors handling the project, Odofin Taiwo Henry to be kept in police custody at Panti alongside Nyong for the next 30 days.
Nyong, 34, was arrested on Thursday, March 10 while the contractor was picked up on Wednesday.
The Lagos state government has initially sealed off the building, which was originally designed to be a three-storey building but the building owners, Messrs Lekki Worldwide Estate Limited, the promoters of Lekki Gardens were said to have unsealed the property and went ahead to build the approved floors.
It was gathered that as at Thursday, 24 bodies were recovered from the scene of the incident, while others were still being recovered. - (Source)
