DISCIPLINE: THE LIFE WIRE OF DESTINY | BY OLAYINKA EKUNDAYO

TEXT: I Corinthians 9:27, Proverbs 5:12.
“He who ignores discipline comes to poverty and shame, but whoever heeds correction is honored.” Proverbs 13:18

“Discipline is the soul of an army. It makes small numbers formidable; procures success to the weak, and esteem to all. -(George Washington)
In my study of great individuals who made landmark contributions in their generations; I am yet to come across anyone who lives carelessly and end up meritoriously.
Discipline is a recurring decimal of their lives. Every great man is great to the degree of his discipline. Their daily schedule spells out a well defined disciplined lifestyle.
One thing is certain: it is the quality of your schedule that determines the extent of your success while your rituals or routines go a long way to define your results and rise in life.

WHY DISCIPLINE?
Understanding the reason for discipline initiates the passion for it.

1.     DESTINY IS ALWAYS AT THE MERCY OF DISCIPLINE!
Brian Tracy defines discipline as ‘the ability to do what needs to be done, when it’s to be done whether you feel like it or not.’
Many destinies have ended up shabbily or as shadows as a result of the lack of discipline. Some names like Samson, Judas, Esau, Absalom etc. come to mind as examples of victims of indiscipline.
Dear friends, the quality of your finishing in destiny is at the mercy of the degree of self-discipline at work in your daily routine.
If you can shift in discipline, you can soar higher in destiny.
To see more results than you have ever seen now, you must embrace more self-discipline!

2.     TIME HOLDS NO VALUE AND WEIGHT WITHOUT A SENSE OF DISCIPLINE!
Each of us has 86400 seconds at our disposal every day. We are to trade with them daily. However, what becomes of our day is the resultant effect of our sense of discipline in relation to time on a daily basis.
Nothing can ever be achieved on this planet without trading with time.
Therefore the wastage of time is the wastage of life. The easiest thing to waste is a lifetime. Any disrespect to the 24hours of our days is a warrant for a wasted lifetime.
It takes self-discipline to live a life of planning, priorities and preparation on a daily basis. It is your sense of discipline that determines where you are located in the time quadrant.

NOT URGENT

NOT IMPORTANT

Q4

THE Q1 Person is a Procrastinator (Crisis manager)
The Q2 Person is a Prioritiser and Planner (Very Disciplined)
The Q3 Person is a Yes man (undisciplined)
The Q4 Person is a Slacker (Highly undisciplined).
It takes a high degree of Self-discipline to live in Q2 and not in Q4.

3.     IT TAKES DISCIPLINE TO PUT YOURSELF UNDER CONTROL!
He who cannot control himself can never control anything. Anyone who cannot rule over his own kingdom will never be able to rule over any external kingdom. You must conquer the territory of your life first before you can conquer the territory of life.
Success is first of all within then without.
It takes discipline to put the cravings of your body under control.
The ability to say NO is a function of your self-discipline.

In the Chinese culture, self-discipline is the ability to be a god over oneself. It is living with strict laws over oneself.
It takes self-discipline for a teenager to say no to peer pressure, premarital sex, drugs, junk foods, pornography, excessive surfing of internet and TV, gangsterism, time wasting vices etc.
A child of destiny without a strong sense of discipline ends up as a destitute.

BOOSTERS OF DISCIPLINE
How do we engage more self-discipline in our lives as young people so that we can become worthwhile responsible individuals tomorrow?
a.     LIVE WITH PURPOSE IN MIND
b.     SET GOALS FOR YOUR LIFE
c.      DELAY YOUR GRATIFICATION
d.     ASSOCIATE CORRECTLY
e.     RESPECT TIME

a.     LIVE WITH PURPOSE IN MIND
Purpose answers the question WHY? The understanding of purpose is what helps a man to live in discipline. To a purposeful fellow time holds value but the reverse is true for someone who lacks a sense of purpose.
b.     SET GOALS FOR YOUR LIFE
In order to achieve your purpose, it must be broken down into smaller targets called goals.
A good goal must stretch you to become someone that can hit the target you have seen in your mind.
c.      DELAY YOUR GRATIFICATION
Be a later person and not a now person when it comes to enjoyment vs paying the price for progress!
You either pay now and play later or play now and pay later!
It’s always better to delay gratification.
d.     ASSOCIATE CORRECTLY
The quality of your association reveals the strength of your self-discipline. The quality of the people you walk with confirms the level of your discipline and how far you can ever go. No association leaves you the same; thy either strengthens your self-discipline or make it slack!

e.     RESPECT TIME
“The killing of time is not murder, it is suicide.” Dr. Myles Munroe
Time is an irreplaceable commodity that escapes through our fingers like grains of sand. How you treat time confirms your level of self-discipline.
Stop wasting time anymore, rather invest it on qualitative assignments.
Shalom!
