Tactics that Helped Aresnal Beat Bayern in UCL - Wenger Revealed

Arsenal FC v FC Bayern Munchen - UEFA Champions League

According to 90mins.com, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has explained the tactical tweaks which helped his side to a surprise 2-0 win over Bayern Munich on Tuesday night, which keeps them in with a chance of qualifying for the next round of the Champions League.

The Frenchman who is a year older today, revealed that the Gunners' tactics changed on the fly when it became clear that the visitors were dominating possession, saying: “Bayern had more possession than us but we decided to make it tight in our final third and catch them on the break. It was not deliberate from the start but I thought when we played very high up we stopped them well from playing."

"When we were playing halfway they opened us up too much. So I decided to drop Ozil a bit deeper and make it tighter around the box and catch them on the break. We had the pace to do it and to find some space as the game went on. "

"In the last part of the game when we went longer and won the long balls they suddenly could more in their half and they struggled much more. I think they dropped a bit physically as well. Overall I think we have beaten a very strong team. We kept a strong level from the first minute to the last and we kept a clean sheet as well.”

He also praised the impact of Olivier Giroud, who scored the opening goal 10 minutes before the end of the match. Giroud's role has been largely limited to substitute appearances of late, scoring all of his last four goals when coming off the bench.

Wenger said: "Give him some credit, it is not easy for Giroud. He had a little dip in form but he is coming back to his best. The focus and spirit he shows, he's a winner. When it doesn't work on the ground, he gives us options in the air. I like both Giroud and Walcott, it is just a question of making sure I use them in the right way."
